has two main meanings:
1. Literal, normal meaning
κουφάλα = a hollow / cavity in something solid, usually:
- η κουφάλα του δέντρου → the hollow in a tree trunk
- τρύπα / κούφωμα / άδειο εσωτερικό
2. Slang / insult (this is the interesting one)
κουφάλα = “you sneaky bastard”, “you sly f***er”, “you little snake”, etc.
Important:
- It can be aggressive / insulting (“ρε κουφάλα!” = “you bastard!” with anger).
- But it can also be used ironically / almost affectionately between friends, like:
- “Έλα ρε κουφάλα, πού χάθηκες?” π.χ. Well well, you sneaky bastard, where’ve you been?
So tone matters a lot:
- With smile + laughs = playful.
- With angry voice = straight-up insult.
It usually carries the idea that the other person:
- did something secretly
- tricked you
- kept something good for themselves
- outsmarted you in a cheeky way
You don’t say that to a teacher, a boss, or someone you don’t know well.

equivalents depending on tone – Ισοδύναμα (ανάλογα με το νόημα):
- friendly: “you sly dog”, “you little bastard”, “you sneaky fucker” (colloquial, rude)
- hostile: “asshole”, “bastard”
alternatives for “κουφάλα” in a joking way – Αντίστοιχα με το “κουφάλα” με περιπαικτικό, φιλικό τόνο:
- «Πονηρέ!» = “You sly one!” (milder)
- or «ρε απατεώνα» jokingly = “you little scammer,” playful
