King Leonidas of Sparta and his 300 warriors dared to hold off the massive Persian army at Thermopylae. Though they perished, their stand became a legendary symbol of courage and sacrifice for freedom.
During the Greek War of Independence, the besieged citizens and fighters of Missolonghi dared to break through the Ottoman siege (1826). The night escape ended in tragedy, but it stirred Europe’s sympathy and strengthened the Philhellenic movement.
In the 1600s, Galileo dared to challenge the Catholic Church by supporting Copernicus’ theory that the Earth revolves around the sun. This led to his trial and house arrest.
