World War II

It began on September 1, 1939, with the invasion of Poland.

It lasted six years.

Approximately 70 million people lost their lives.

Unfortunately, as I write these lines, exactly 86 years after that tragic day, the clouds of war are gathering once again over Europe.

It is often referred to as: WWII, WW II, WW2, WW 2, 2nd WW

Examples:
Eighty-six years after the flames of World War II were ignited, ominous clouds of war once more cast their shadow over Europe.
More than 200 cities across Europe and Japan were left in ruins by the end of WWII, with entire urban centers flattened.
